| The Franconia-Springfield Parkway is an arterial highway that runs from VA 638 Rolling Road and VA 7100 Fairfax County Parkway to VA 613 Beulah Street. It is 6 lanes total along its entire length and includes several interchanges as well as some signalized and non-signalized intersections. The speed limit along the entire Parkway is 50 MPH. The planning name for the Franconia-Springfield Parkway was the "Springfield Bypass and Extension." The Franconia-Springfield Parkway was planned along with the Fairfax County Parkway. My page on the Fairfax County Parkway has a history of the planning process and the building of the roads. The Franconia-Springfield Parkway itself opened in June of 1992. The interchange at Frontier Drive was completely open by early 1996. The road does bypass the congested VA 644 Old Keene Mill Road corridor through "Downtown" Springfield. The Franconia-Springfield Parkway also provides access to the I-95 HOV lanes (both north and southbound) without having to deal with the I-95/VA 644 interchange. Although the VA 7900 Franconia-Springfield Parkway designation ends at VA 613 Beulah Street, the road itself continues as local 4 lane divided road called Manchester Lakes Boulevard and Kingstowne Parkway. At the physical end of the road at Van Dorn Street, there is a ghost extension farther east. I have not been able to determine where this would go or whether the VA 7900 Franconia-Springfield Parkway designation would be extended if and when any road would be built to the east. |
On the map to the right, you can see the path of the Franconia-Springfield Parkway and its twin the Fairfax County Parkway. The Franconia-Springfield Parkway is shown in gray. The completed sections of the Fairfax County Parkway are shown in dark blue. The sections which are not completed are shown in red. The map is from the Fairfax County Government web site. I have maintained these colors as closely as possible in the Exit/Intersection List below.
The Franconia-Springfield Parkway is signed east/west its entire length. On the Exit/Intersection List below, read down for eastbound and up for westbound.
