Above, looking east , the 3,642-foot-long 29-span VA-288 James River Bridge (actually twin bridges each with two lanes and full shoulders). The long overland section of the bridge south of the river is necessary to cross the flood plain of the river. Heavy flood conditions on the James River will flood that entire section of land, and standing pools of water can be seen in the photo, which resulted from heavy rainfall.
