Route 895 Construction - August 2001 - Photos 1-5

Here's more photos of Route 895 under construction, taken by Brett Lomenzo of Blacksburg, Virginia, in early August 2000 and sent to me to be used on my website. Thank you Brett!

Above, looking west, taken from the east bridge abutment, east approach embankment fill to the Route 895 James River Bridge, looking at the east land approach bridge construction. The mainline concrete box girder approach spans are being built by the pre-cast post-tensioned segmental method, with the segments being placed by the tracked crane. The overhead launching truss seen on the higher approach spans is not needed here, since the bridge is closer to the ground at this point, and there is unobstructed land underneath and near the bridge so that this crane operation is feasible.

Above, looking west, taken from mid-span on the main span of the Route 895 James River Bridge. The west pier of of the westbound main span of the bridge, is visible in the center of the photo. The elevated ramp is Ramp H, which is the ramp from westbound Route 895 to northbound I-95. I-95 is visible below the ramp. The water visible is a settling pond at the Dupont Industrial Park.

Above, looking east, taken from mid-span on the main span of the Route 895 James River Bridge, at the end of the currently constructed portion. The east piers of the westbound and eastbound main span of the bridge, are visible in the center of the photo. The steel structures are the traveling forms used to cast each segment of the main spans, which are being built by the cast-in-place balanced cantilever method.
