Route 895 Construction - February 2002 - Photos 17-20

Here's 4 photos of Route 895 under construction, taken on February 26, 2002, by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and used here by their permission.

Above, the gantry that spans the mainline of Route 895, which holds the cameras and electronic transponder readers for the electronic toll collection equipment. A fairly wide-angle lens was used for this photo, and it exaggerates the perspective.

Each of the 5 units has a camera for photographing the license plate of any vehicle which does not have a Smart Tag, so that a bill can be sent to that party. The units are positioned so that there will be one over the center of each of the two lanes, and one over each edge of a lane; so that a vehicle will always be within the scan of one of the units.
