Route 895 Construction - January 2002 Photos

Here's 4 photos of Route 895 under construction, taken in mid January, 2002.

Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking west onto Route 895. The overpass bridge in the distance is Wilton Road, and the mainline toll plaza construction is just beyond that. Highway sign installation is underway. Installation of toll collection equipment is underway, with vehicle testing of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system. Cars and 2-axle vehicles will pay $1.50. I took this photo with a telephoto lens (135 mm or 2.7x) with a 2x teleconverter, effectively providing 270 mm or 5.4x. The intent was to show a detailed photo of the toll collection related signs for westbound traffic approaching the mainline toll plaza.

Above, I'm standing on the Osborne Turnpike overpass bridge, looking east onto Route 895. Paving work is near completion on this section, with lines painted on the eastbound roadway. Highway sign installation is underway. The off-ramp in the distance is for the Laburnum Avenue Connection. This photo was taken in the same session as the previous one, from the same overpass bridge, a few minutes later. I took this photo with a telephoto lens (135 mm or 2.7x) with a 2x teleconverter, effectively providing 270 mm or 5.4x. The intent was to show a detailed photo of the directional route signing on the highway for eastbound traffic. As you can see, Route 895 is being signed with the Virginia primary route shield. The left overhead directional sign says "EAST 895 to NORTH 295".

Above, I'm standing on the VA-5 New Market Road overpass, looking west onto Route 895. The two mainline bridges cross over Cornelius Creek, and the westbound bridge has a spur bridge branching off to Ramp A, the westbound off ramp to the Laburnum Avenue Connection. Highway sign installation is underway. This photo was taken in the same session as the previous two, about 30 minutes later. I took this photo with a telephoto lens (135 mm or 2.7x) with a 2x teleconverter, effectively providing 270 mm or 5.4x. The intent was to show a detailed photo of the directional route signing on the highway for westbound traffic. As you can see, Route 895 is being signed with the Virginia primary route shield. The left overhead directional sign says "WEST 895 to 95 150 - Richmond".

Above, I'm standing on the Charles City Road overpass, looking north onto Interstate Route I-295. I-295 has six lanes on this section. The deceleration lane construction to the left is for the southbound off-ramp to Route 895 westbound. The acceleration lane construction to the right is for the northbound on-ramp from Route 895 eastbound. I-295's roadway was built with six 12-foot-wide lanes of continuously reinforced Portland cement concrete pavement, and the shoulders were built with plain reinforced Portland cement concrete pavement, and both the right and left shoulders are 10 feet wide each.
