12-28-2001: I have 4 new November photos of Route VA-288 construction near Richmond, Virginia. There are 2 photos of construction of the 3,642-foot-long VA-288 James River Bridge, and beginnings of a major cut on the north side of the river, taken from the north side of the river, and one photo taken of the same from the south side of the river. There is a photo of the heavy excavation for the construction of the VA-288 roadways, near VA-650 River Road in Goochland County. 12-27-2001: I have 6 new November photos of Route 895 construction near Richmond, Virginia. Photos #1 through #3 show, 1) construction of west abutment and west approach to the Route 895 James River Bridge; 2) construction of Ramp E, which is the ramp from I-95 northbound to Route 895 eastbound, 3) construction of Route 895 from the Willson Road overpass bridge over Route 895. Photos #4 through #6 show construction on the eastbound span of the main span of the Route 895 James River Bridge, which is being built by the cast-in-place balanced cantilever method. 12-25-2001: Construction updates to my article "Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-495 and I-95)", with information from an Engineering News-Record magazine article that gives some information about the probable rebidding of the Main Bridge Contract - Potomac River Bridge, which only had one bid, which was 70% over budget.
12-17-2001: Updated "Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk" article, by adding 7 photos to the 5 photos that I had previously posted there back in 1997; the article is linked from "Chesapeake Bay Bridge". All the photos were taken by me on the same Bridge Walk day in 1987. I have the 12 photos on 3 successive webpages, 4 photos per page, and the sequence is as I walk from the east end of the bridge to the west end of the bridge. You can click on each photo for a larger version. Also, once you are on the "Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk" article, I have a link to an article where all three webpages are combined onto one single webpage, for those of you who have the speed of Internet connection and computer power to handle it.
12-14-2001: Construction updates to my article "Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-495 and I-95)", concerning Project Labor Agreement (PLA) denial by FHWA, and concerning opening of bid on Main Bridge Contract - Potomac River Bridge.
12-7-2001: I have made major updates to my article "Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-495 and I-95)". Actually it needed a lot of updating with information over the last two years. I've added information in this section - "Woodrow Wilson Bridge Improvement Study". I've added these completely new sections - "New Woodrow Wilson Bridge Clears Legal Hurdles", "Woodrow Wilson Bridge Ownership", and "Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Construction Program".
12-03-2001: I have 7 new October photos of Route VA-288 construction near Richmond, Virginia. The first four photos are of the construction of the 3,642-foot-long VA-288 James River Bridge and approaches, seen from the Goochland County (northern side) of the river. The 5th photo is of the construction of the VA-288 James River Bridge and approaches, seen from the Powhatan County (southern side) of the river. The 6th and 7th photos show heavy construction equipment that is being used on the roadway portion of the project. 11-29-2001: I revised the "911" tribute section about the 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks on the main page and moved it to the lower part of the page. I added links to a slide show tribute by Steve Golding of New York City, about the attacks and the aftermath.
11-16-2001: I have 24 new October photos of Route 895 construction near Richmond, Virginia. I took the first 8 photos on October 8th, and took the second 16 photos on October 9th while I was on an ASHE (American Society of Highway Engineers) field trip to the whole Route 895 project. There are a variety of photos of the land highway sections, the mainline toll plazas, and of the James River Bridge construction. 10-28-2001: I scanned two July photos of Route VA-288 construction near Richmond, Virginia, showing dualization of the existing 2-lane VA-288 in Goochland County. I also moved the three VA-288 construction photos on the main page "Richmond Beltway (I-295 and VA-288)" to a new article - "Route 288 Construction - June to August 2001" which includes the two new July photos, and this new article is accessed by hyperlink from - "Richmond Beltway (I-295 and VA-288)".
10-23-2001: "Baltimore Metro Subway" article - I have made a major expansion to this article, including maps and photos, and added a new article. The Baltimore Metro rapid rail transit line operates along a 15.5-mile (24.8 km) long route between downtown Baltimore and Owings Mills in the northwest suburbs, with 14 stations serving the communities along the system, and it was built in three sections (opened 8 miles in 1983, 6 miles in 1987 and 1.5 miles in 1995) for a total cost of $1.392 billion. Even though most of the Baltimore Metro is aboveground, the term "subway" is commonly used to denote the system, both today as well as in the past back to the system planning stages in the 1970s. 10-20-2001: New article: "Interstate 77 New River Bridge" - I-77 in Virginia crosses over the New River and US-52 on twin high-level bridges, in Wythe County, 5 miles south of Fort Chiswell and 2 miles north of Poplar Camp. I have information about the bridges, along with three 10-5-2001 photos of the bridge that I took on my Hillsville VA road trip. The article is accessed by hyperlink from my main page.
10-18-2001: "Interstate 81 and Interstate 77" article - I added two photos from the 10-5-2001 trip, looking west from the overpass near VA-758 and the state police headquarters (Exit 77), showing I-81/I-77 in Wythe County. You can click for a telephoto (135mm, 2.7x) image from the same vantage point, where the parallel service roads are easier to see.

9-10-2001: I have an assortment of new photos posted. "James River Bridge (US-17)" article - added an aerial photo from right after the new bridge was completed in 1982, and a June 1980 photo riding on the old lift span with the new lift span under construction next to it. "Chesapeake Expressway (VA-168)" article - added an aerial photo of the Great Bridge Bypass with the 2,750-foot-long high-level bridge with 65 feet of vertical navigational clearance over the Intracoastal Waterway / Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal; the bridge passes over adjacent wetlands too. "George P. Coleman Bridge" article - photo of the reconstructed Coleman Bridge.

These were offered to me for my website by Brett Lomenzo of Blacksburg, Virginia, which he took while on a visit to the completed portions of the Route 895 James River Bridge. 8-5-2001: New article: "I-195 Beltline Expressway - Construction Photos". Five photos of the highway when it was under construction 1972 to 1975; two aerial and three from ground level. This new article is linked from the existing article "I-195 Beltline Expressway".
7-25-2001: "The Roads of Northern Virginia (by Mike Hale)" - Mike sent me more new and updated files, and I've uploaded them. New page on the unbuilt I-266 which includes maps from a study on I-266. Factual and historical updates to the Dulles Greenway, I-395, Prince William Parkway, I-95 and I-66 pages. New page for the 1969 Major Thoroughfare Plan showing I-395 at the Four Mile Run Expressway showing how I-395 in that area was reconstructed to accommodate the freeway.
7-23-2001: "The Roads of Northern Virginia (by Mike Hale)" - Mike sent me new and updated files, and I've uploaded them. Updated articles: VA-28 Sully/Centreville Road (from the State Routes Page), VA-620 Braddock Road (from the State Secondary Routes Page), VA-7100 Fairfax County Parkway (from the State Secondary Routes Page), VA-7900 Franconia-Springfield Parkway (from the State Secondary Routes Page). Also includes a link to a map of the selected and studied alternatives for the Springfield Bypass and Extension on the VA-7100 and VA-7900 pages. The following is new: Scanned several of the proposed interchanges from the 1969 Northern Virginia Major Thoroughfare Plan. You can access the 1969 Northern Virginia Major Thoroughfare Plan Information Page from the History and Maps page on the site.
7-21-2001: "Richmond Interstates and Expressways" article - I've greatly expanded the article to over 11,500 words; the previous article had 2,500 words. I've also added a number of maps; two proposal maps from a 1946 regional expressway study, a 1966 proposed Richmond expressway system map and an artist's aerial rendering of the proposed Downtown Expressway, and a 1968 regional map showing the Recommended 1980 Thoroughfare Plan for the Richmond Regional Area. Each image has 4 successively larger image links. Starting from 1946 onward, there was much local discussion and debate about building a modern system of urban and metropolitan freeways and bridges for the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. This article traces the history of the development of the system, mostly focusing on the City of Richmond, but also including regional highways.

5-28-2001: New website article - "Chesapeake Expressway (VA-168)". The Chesapeake Expressway is the name that has been given to the 16.5-mile-long limited access highway from the I-64/I-464 interchange to the North Carolina border. It was completed in May 2001.
5-20-2001: I have 10 new photos of Route 895 construction near Richmond, Virginia. I have 10 new photos of Route 895 Connector construction near Richmond, Virginia. I took these last weekend when a contractor employee drove me all up and down the land highway portions of the project (he didn't take me onto the James River Bridge portion since another contractor is building that part). I got a lot of nice photos from vantage points that I was not in before. 5-6-2001: "Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664)" article - Added information from newspaper articles published when the MMMBT opened, and a current photo of the I-664 South Trestle. "Interstate 664 History" article - added information from the Location Hearing Information brochure, and the Route 664 Design Study Report, which were distributed to the public by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation. This includes direct excerpts and two maps showing I-664 routes selected for detailed study. Each map image has larger size versions of each.
4-28-2001: "James River Bridge (US-17)" article - scanned two of my May 1983 photos of the James River Bridge, showing it soon after the new bridge was completed, with old lift span not removed yet. Each photo has a larger size version of each.
4-14-2001: The new article "The Roads of Northern Virginia (by Mike Hale)" is actually a website developed by Mike Hale of Centreville, Virginia. It discusses regional Interstates, other freeways and major arterials, plus history and maps, and it has a map of the 1969 Northern Virginia Major Thoroughfare Plan, and it includes articles about the VA-7100 Fairfax County Parkway, the VA-7900 Franconia-Springfield Parkway (the planning name of the FCP/FSP complex was the Springfield Bypass), and the VA-3000 Prince William Parkway. This website was formerly hosted by Mike, and he decided that he was unable to continue hosting it, so he gave the website to me in April 2001, with the intent that I would host part or all of it on my website. For now, I have uploaded all of his website here, with no changes to any of his articles. He developed it, so he deserves credit for the work and research.
4-8-2001: "Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk" article (linked from "Chesapeake Bay Bridge" article) - rescanned and processed all 5 photos with Adobe Photo Shop. Each photo has a larger size version of each.
3-31-2001: I have 5 more photos of Route 895 construction near Richmond, Virginia. These were taken June 6, 2000, while I was on an ASHE (American Society of Highway Engineers) field trip to the project. These show more details of the pre-cast post-tensioned segmental construction method, which is being used to build the approaches of the Route 895 James River Bridge. 3-31-2001: New website article - "I-64 Widening Projects in Newport News and Hampton VA". The total mainline length is 5.1 miles, from 0.5 mile west of Denbigh Boulevard to 0.3 mile east of US-17 J Clyde Morris Boulevard.

3-10-2001: " US-58 Widening and Bypasses in Mecklenburg County, Virginia" article - article updated with a lot of new information about segment completions over the last year including the South Hill Bypass, plus the beginning of construction for the Clarksville Bypass. Added scanned images of maps of the South Hill Bypass and Clarksville Bypass. Moved the six construction photos from September 1998 to a separate page linked from the main page. I have a new photo of the South Hill Bypass on the main page, and I have set up a "drill-down" feature that I have thought about in the past. By clicking the photo with the cursor and mouse, it will link to successively later versions of the same photo vantage point.
3-1-2001: New website article - "US-33 Stanardsville Bypass and Projects in Greene County". This is in Virginia and includes 4 photos.
2-26-2001: I have 3 new photos of Route 895 which is under construction near Richmond, Virginia. These are on my existing article - "Route 895 Construction" which is accessed by hyperlink from my article - "Route 895 Connector".
2-18-2001: New website article - "Washington Metrorail Photos". Has links to pages with photos that I have taken of the Washington Metrorail system. Some short detail descriptions are included. Huntington Station (southern Yellow Line terminal) - 6 Photos. Greenbelt Station (northern Green Line terminal) - 6 Photos. Metrorail Car Interior - 4 Photos.
1-28-2001: "Articles and Links about Roads and Transportation" article - added link to the Thoreau Institute of Oregon.
1-23-2001: New website article - "Metrorail Branch Avenue Route Completion". The 6.5-mile-long section of the Branch Avenue Route (F Route), between Anacostia Station and Branch Avenue Station, which carries Green Line trains, opened on January 13, 2001, completing construction of the originally planned 103-mile-long, with 83 stations, Adopted Regional System (ARS) of the WMATA Metrorail system, which began construction in D.C. on the Red Line at Judiciary Square in 1969. I have links to pages for each of the five new stations, with 16 photos that I took.
1-14-2001: New website article - "Metrorail Mid-City Line Opening". The new segment added 2.9 miles of revenue miles to the WMATA Metrorail system, and 2 new stations, the Columbia Heights Station and the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Station, and it carries Green Line trains. The entire segment and its stations are in subway. It connected the temporary ends of the Greenbelt Route (Green Line trains) at U Street-Cardozo Station and Fort Totten Station.
1-11-2001: "Richmond Beltway" article - updated article with information about the 17.5-mile-long western portion of VA-288 that will soon be fully under construction in spring 2001. I also have a detailed map of the section, with details of the route and the 10 interchanges that this section will have.
1-4-2001: "Richmond Interstates and Expressways" article - updated with major research material from Apr 30 1999 post to misc.transport.road.
1-2-2001: New website article - "Chesapeake Bay Bridge Photos", with seven links to photo pages. It is linked from my main Chesapeake Bay Bridge article, "Chesapeake Bay Bridge". I scanned and posted 27 photos of the bridge that I took back in the 1970s. This includes 12 photos of the bridge taken in January 1977; this was the winter that saw record cold temperatures over much of the Eastern U.S., and at this point at the Bay Bridge, almost the entire Chesapeake Bay surface was frozen over. This also includes 12 photos that I took while driving across the westbound bridge in July 1976.
